Brake Questions

I don't own a Mercedes, but one of my coworkers has asked if I would be willing to do some brake (pads & rotors) work for him. Did a little searching on the site and it looks like a pretty easy job to replace the fronts.

I don't want to make this guy by a Haynes manual if I don't have to... Is there an on-line service manual where I could find the torque settings for the caliper bolts and wheel lugs?

it's not a bog job, but those caliper retaining bolts are hard work to remove and you MUST replace them with new - they are coated with an adhesive to ensure they don't vibrate out and i suspect they are "stretch" the ones we took out of ours were a couple of mm longer than the replacements supplied by Mercedes.

Other than that it's a walk in the park

.

Just a litlle fyi, Haynes doesn't make a manual for the W124's, nor does Chiltons. The ONLY book like this I have found is this http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...213712-2872816

Oh yes they are

via mail order. Haynes even except dollars.

There are a few differences between the Euro and the US but brakes are the same.

For the UK model, yes, but if you have a US model that wouldn't make great sense. The point here is that Haynes doesn't currently have a manual available, in the US, for the US model.

Sometimes you have to be happy with whatever you can get. You guys in the US are fortunate to have manuals available from MBNA for your North American delivered Benzes. In Australia, we having nothing specifically for our cars. For my 300TE I make do with the MBNA W124 chassis and body manuals and the M103 engine manual, a Haynes W124 manual and a Brooklands (I think) W124 manual. By way of reading all of these and trying to identify the (large number of) differences, I then attempt to work out how something comes apart and hopefully goes back together. For my 350SLC I make do with MBNA W107 chassis and body and M116/117 engine manuals and a Haynes W107 manual. For the 190E in addition to a Haynes manual, I have only an MBNA W201 chassis and body manual but cannot obtain an M102 manual. For this I rely on a copy in our club library.

I believe the CDROMS cover everything in the manuals (and more). I will have to investigate these one day but they tend to be expensive. Then again, the printed ones aren't cheap. The last ones I bought (for the 190E) were around $50 AUD for the Haynes and $180 AUD for the W201 chassis and body!

I just picked up one of the UK 124 Haynes manuals and it really helped me out in flushing radiator, changing coolant and changing thermostat.

I did read it in concert with the E Class owners bible, and the two together do increase the info you need for doing maintenance work.

Got it from Toad Hall Press in Denver for around $30 and I consider it very helpful.
