Hi, I just got my 87 300E and I would like to upgrade the sound. It's has all the original equipment. What size are the stock speakers? Any brand preference on replacements? Thanks!
You got about 4'' speakers in front
You got about 5'' speakers in back
I would recommend a new head unit as well. Check out the CDX-MP70. I have this in my car with infinity 4'' speakers in front and sony xplod 5.25'' speakers in back. The sound improvement is amazing. Check this out:

It's a little pricy, but this head unit works well with Benz's.
If you need help, let me know. I went through hell getting this system installed, but I have tips to help other people make the installation relatively easy.

I'd like to see some pics of the installation. I don't like how much aftermarket stereos stand out with all the crazy colors. Yours looks pretty nice, though.

Sure, I can get some pics for ya. The cars getting an oil change and getting some winter tires put on. I'll be installing the V60 phone at the end of this week. I'll get some pics by like Friday.
Yea, the colors can clash. For some reason, the silver head unit doesn't look as bad as you would think in my brown interior. I guess the head unit itself just looks so nice, no one cares.
Also, all my equipment in the car is set to an orange display which matches well to the speedometer, tach, and all the guages.
Hi,
I did switch out mine with Pioneer unit and now the FM reception is really bad. Did you have to do anything to bypass the stock AMP or something to connect to antenna?
Thanks for your help.

No. My head unit had a connector for the antenna AND a 12v power antenna switch. Basically, when you switch on your head unit to the radio, it alerts the power antenna, and it raises.
I'll take some pics of the head unit out this friday, while I'm installing the phone. You should have two wires for the antenna, the power antenna trigger and the antenna feed line or transmission line itself.

I don't like most of the new ones with the light shows and the weird designs. The Sony CDX-MP70 looks classy though, and the fact that an orange display is available is a plus. I think it will look good with my gray interior. Does it clash with the wood though? I'd really like to see pics.
Where are you buying it from and how much are you paying if you don't mind me asking? I've seen them on Ebay for under 300 bucks, but Crutchfield and Cartoys are selling them for around 500.
Also, I want to have the AUX input available so that I can plug in my MP3 player. Do you know what would be involved with that? Is it just a cable that goes in to the back? Can I route it to the glovebox where I can just plug in the MP3 player?

It doesn't clash with the wood too bad. My wood is brown, and it doesn't look too bad. It kind of becomes the focal point of the instrument cluster, so no one cares about how bad it looks.
Yea, mine was quite expensive, $500 when I bought it. I must note that crutchfield was extremely helpful when I purchased mine for the 300E.
The AUX input is very nice. In the CDXMP70, it has two RCA composite (L and R) cables coming out of it. I plugged in an adapter for a stereo jack (The one your CD player or MP3 Player or Laptop uses for headphones). I have a wire I leave in the car that can plug into a laptop or whatever equipment is brought into the car, and it plays over all 4 speakers. My Aux just sits on the corner of the instrument cluster (it runs under the ash tray). You could purchase a longer adapter plug and get it to your glove box, though. I never thought of that.
It's a 2000 model so it's not silver and it looks pretty good. The power button is a blue dot (go figure) but it doesn't stand out too much. I don't have a digital camera but there's a picture here:

I have yet to replace the stock speakers which literally hurt my ears they're so bad...
