1989 300E Fuel Gauge Weirdness

The needle jumps all over the place when the tank gets down to half full. Is this the sign of a bad sending unit?
I just got this car last week. It belonged to a 91 year old woman and it has 34,000 miles on it. I suspect she never let the tank get below half full.

Bad sending unit

Moisture in the tank has led to rust in the tank. Could have also built up on the sending unit. How many tanks have you run through? Maybe try an additive to remove water in the fuel too.

Fuel Gauge Sender

They all do it. I've been driving Mercedes-Benzes for 25 years and it's a common problem on the older models. You can remove the sender unit, dismantle it, clean it and reassemble it. In doing this though, many people manage to break the fine slide wires. Then you have to replace it anyway! I wouldn't worry about it. The reserve light will still warn you when you are getting low (12 to 15 litres remaining). I also reset my trip meter at each fill and with time you learn how far each tankful will take you.

$30 sending unit, 5minute job

I replaced mine about two months ago. It takes literally 5 minutes to replace on my 91 300E.

Yea I have that same problem. I usually keep it over half full to avoid it from jumping. ...

Yea I have that same problem. I usually keep it over half full to avoid it from jumping. I do let it go all the way down every so often, to avoid keeping old gas in the tank (probably doesn't even matter).

Anyway, I'd love to know how much that item costs too! I thought I was the only one with this stupid problem. I have been enlightened.
