I recently changed the transmission fluid on my 300CE and after finishing, have noticed what sounds like a sticking lifter. While rotating the engine to position the TC drain plug, I may have inadvertantly rotated engine backwards about 20 degrees. Would this hurt the cam/lifters? I did an oil change just in case it was dirty oil (2K miles on oil). No help. Is it time to pull the valve cover?
I can't imagine to hurt cams or lifters only if timing chance, if the engine still runs ok is not that, sometimes lifters start to make noise if they pressed harder or different position deeper over normal movement usually they fixed themselves after a little driving,
You can't damage a cam or lifter by turning it backwards. The noise is probably a coincidence. I'd try using a good synthetic like Mobil-1 (15W-50 or 0W-40) at the next change and see if that quiets it down. It may take 5kmi or so with Mobil-1 to clean things out. Unless the noise is REALLY bad you won't be able to tell anything by pulling the valve cover, I'd leave it alone.

HTH,
