'88 300D tranny is leaking ATF from behind the inhibitor switch , so my guess is that the seal
around the shiftinglever is leaking , is this one hard to replace ?
I have an 87 300E so this comment might not apply to your trans. Mine was leaking in the same area and it was a bad o-ring where the B-2 band reaction valve fits into the transmission case. Changing this o-ring with the trans in the car was a tedious but not particularly difficult job. You have to remove the valve body and other smaller items blocking access to the reaction valve. You can then push the reaction valve in just far enough to get to the o-ring in the bore in the trans case. My guess is that changing the shift rod seal would be nearly impossible with the trans in the car - but I'm not sure.
Good luck.
I forgot to mention that you can determine where the leak is coming from by removing the neutral safety switch, plugging the wire harness back in, starting the car and watching for the leak to show up.
