I'm a BMW driver who is considering a Mercedes 300TE wagon. My only dilemma is, I want a manual tranny. Automatic just doesn't provide that much excitement.

Does anyone know if it's possible to put a manual Getrag or other transmission in this car? How much would it cost? Any suggestions for mechanics in the Los Angeles area who would do this kind of a job?
Thanks.
David Gadd
The only people that I have heard of doing this successfully is RENNTech in Florida (there could be others I don't know of). They converted a CLK (a very very modfied one at that) to a 6 speed. I'm sure it can be done, but I am also sure it would be insanely expensive. Just not sure it would be worthwhile....
David- My hunch is it would be extrememly difficult and costly, and even if it could be done successfully, will likely lead to all kinds of headaches down the road. While I can't speak to MB, I do know many cars today are produced with slightly different chassis configurations, depending on whether the car is straight shift or auto, since an auto tends to be bigger/heavier...

Personally, I think this would be more trouble than it's worth. -Chazzer
i have no idea why you would want to anyway. MB just cannot seem to make a decent manual tranny, and the ones that were in the 124 were just awful. Very juch like moving a walking cane through a bowl of oatmeal. Save your $$ for something else. The 124 wagons are nice, reliable and safe. If you want to shift, an BMW E34 wagon would be a better bet, if you can find one. Good luck, allen.
