This is why I am buying a house with a garage in the coming few months. Its mandatory. The wagon's getting locked up every day.
Wish car's had a anti-theft device that held the offending person down til you get there. Then justice is served when you arrive.
Care to elaborate on that one? The only thing I know that will hold a person down till you get there is a 12ga.
And be careful out there of the law...you can usually only use lethal force inside your house. Defending yourself outside your domicile requires that the thug is threatening you with visible, lethal force and even then, it gets sticky. What we have done here is beat the thug to the ground, tape him up with duck tape, throw him somewhere it's really dirty like in a mud puddle, rotting trash etc and called the cops. But then to have this much fun, you have to catch the bastard...
Two of my cars sit in the driveway. They are both protected with video surveillance and an infrared beam. Anyone crosses the infrared immediately rings a chime in my bedroom whereupon I grab the remote and flip on the TV which is left on the camera input before going to bed. In the last two years there have been 4 people checking to see if they are locked and one punk squirting Taco sauce on the trunk lids. All the video is recorded in case I recognize anyone. Two of them I ran out there and hollared at them, any more I think I will just hit the panic button on the remote for the newer car.
My infrared is an Optex 2000. I set it up inside of a 8" piece of PVC with a peephole and a hood, above animal height. No false alarms, ever. If it chimes, there is a person out there.
That's pretty awesome!
I just closed on my house last month. Luckily I am in a really quiet gated community with mostly older families. I spoke with the neighbors when I moved in and they said they've been there since houses were built (2002) and its super safe and quiet which is nice
Last place I lived...someone key'd my old 260E from head to toe. Bastards.... Part of the reason why I got rid of her because it was just horrible and I got quoted $500 to fix it since it was so deep. I just hated looking at it because everything else was so nice.

I live in the area where my trucks parked outside are unlocked. Still regardless the gate somebody went via our glove compartments 4 years ago, stealing radar detector, roll of copper cable and synthetic ATF (!) from the carport.
My friend who has open yard, installed motion sensor with water sprinklers hooked up to them. A person, or an animal crossing the beam gets nice shoot of water on him. That seems to be way more efficient than shotgun in the window.

...i like your friends idea, can you tell me/us how he did that?
to the op and others sorry about your cars being damaged. i had an ex that keyed a beautifil caddy i had 11' long on one side. i never knew one could be convicted for 'injury to a motor vehicle'.
the 300e i bought has the silver star missing and i might leave it off. i thought about replacing it with another or something really cool but the silver star does anger some people, usually younger ones who snag the star as a trophy or a necklace. i dont put mileage badges on the diesels because it just attracts more attention. when i keep them outside i cover them with a car cover but if they really want in they can cut it im sure, it might be just enough for a prowler to pick on an easier mark.
i like the chime infared thing too, imma google it but really like the sprinkler idea, thats funny.

The sprinkler idea is great as long as word doesn't get around, or they wear a rain slicker the next time.
Low-life trash generally need a little more than that as an incentive to stay the f*ck away from your property-if they really want it. They are lazy opportunists yes, but they need some sort of 'persuasion' to leave you alone. The more difficult you make things with traps, cameras etc, the more they think you have valuable stuff.

He did it very simple way. Sprinkler electro-valves are run on 24V. The cheap lights with motion sensor sell for $16 but at 120V they need electrical boxes. Good thing is that you can install the motion sensor on the house, where it is easy to make hardwiring, than tap into the motion sensor wires on the back and hook up the transformer to it. Going from transformer the 24V wire can be run on top of the soil where you have the sprinkler valve. If you don't have pipes buried for sprinkler already, you can add a sprinkler head with spike and run a garden hose to the electro-valve.
The only issue my friend had was when his neighbor guest parked at his property and walk over his lawn. Not necessary a bad thing the sprinkler acted.
You can also order a ready made motion activated rain bird from Smarthome.
That sounds easier. Running wires from the motion senor to the solenoid that controls the zone would work, but with a electronic sprinkler control box for normal use, I'd be afraid of backfeeding voltage to that while it sat there. May not be an issue, dunno.
