I was doing some work on the car this morning (R&R condenser and reseal the top timing cover while everything is apart) and I found that the camshaft driver weld is cracked all the way around. If you press on the 2 halves you can actually see the crack get thinner. Incidentally, it looks like my cap and rotor are also lunched but this may have to do with the fact that they have 60 k miles on them now.
Anyways, this is the 2nd time I've heard about it (I read a post on the w126 forum once about something similar) so it seems like it ISN'T an isolated incident. I dread the thought of what would have happened had the keyed portion of the driver broke off the rotor mount and gotten lodged in the camshaft.
I'm sure lots of cursing would have been witnessed (in the least).
