You're stuck using whatever transmission accompanies the 617, since the bellhousings used throughout the 124 engine range are incompatible. Almost nothing is configured to fit correctly, so you're left to figure out how to modify every step of the process. Clearly a big job, but I've seen it done.
Personally, I'd rather swap in an OM60X, which is designed for the vehicle. Making the SLS work with an OM617 engine that didn't originally come from a T-Model is a whole lot more difficult
