So yesterday after driving for a while I stopped and turned off car for 5min. When I started up again It wouldnt shift out of first. Limped home this way. This morning with the car cold it did the same thing, wouldnt leave 1st, drove a mile or so. I then stopped and tried starting off in 3rd which it did. Drove for a while but it never would shift to 4th. Stoped again then put it in DRIVE. Then is started to shift fine all the way back home.
The trans is a pretty new rebuilt so Im hoping there are other things that cause shifting issues that arnt inside the box? The trans fluid level is good. I do have a small leak from the o-rings? in the kick down solenoid I think.
Any insight into possible casues is very appreciated.
I just disconnected the switch and went for a drive and still the same problem. This time 3rd gear acted just like 1st. It goes in to reverse and neutreul but drive, 3rd, and 2nd start off like its in 1st and never shifts. I dont remember if they used to do this or not but moving the gear lever from drive, 3rd, 2nd at a stop and idle dosnt seem to cylce or noticbly change gears.
So Kevin were you saying that just disconnecting the switch still wont tell me if thats the problem? So it could still be the switch I just need to replace it or make sure the switch is working right?
Any other possibilites? Does the modulator just affect quaility of shift and wouldnt cause a complete no shift issues?
It turned out the 2nd oil pump failed and broke a roll pin in the govener. All fixed without pulling trans. Only a $350 fix with used pump. Cant complain.

$350 on top of a "newly rebuilt" tranny? I think you should complain....a little
Hmmmm, I wonder. This is exactly what my new-to-me 91 300TE 4Matic is doing. And why the PO (and the guy before him) dumped it. The trans is squeaky clean and I'm guessing it was recently rebuilt. it won't upshift out of 1st (or is it 2nd) but will do reverse just fine.
I'll be *delighted* if the problem is just the secondary oil pump.
But i thought that part was deleted for the 89 model year.
