300ce 24v slight delay on upshift

Hi fellow 124 owners,

I know this issue may have other relevant posts somewhere, but i cant find em. I have a slight delay when upshifting through the gears. A mechanic told me there is a shift solonoid that needs replacing. I was thinking it was some adjustment issue. Can we adjust anything? Its not that bad to up-shift, but enough to recognise. Any ideas?

Thanx guys

An MB mech. should be able to adjust the modulator to make it change in a more positive manner.
I have this box and it changes nice and crisply in forward gears -as it should.

I wouldn't allow the 'local Holden/Ford/Toyota' mechanic near it though!

G'day 2 u,

My gear changes are smooth and crisp, but the delay is probably 100 rpm or so late. I think I know where you mean, I think its on top of transmission housing, as vacum lines go there (2 seperate areas above transmission). I wont touch it unless its easily explained procedure. I'm glad i dont have to change something. I was told its common issue with our model?? Thanx for help.

jaz, I'm no expert so don't take my comment Re modulator as gospel. My comment Re only allowing an MB mech. near it is 'gospel' though haha.

Not sure if it's common; the common fault of the 722.5 boxes is the reverse gear failing. How many klms has it done and how is your reverse currently?

Cheers!

PS: Do you have any pics. of your car?

Hi Buddy,

The car has 150,000 KMS on it (i bought it when it was on 70k (kms), the reverse is normal as far as i can tell no prob with it. I also have the 5 speed auto box (not the 4 speed).

It was my local Dr/GP's car, he imported it from Mercedes in Singapore, where he used to work. Ever since i bought it, people tell me the imported 300ce, would have probs in Aust due to different fuel used by both countries, especially Cat converter issues, and a lazy shift issue. I only experienced the lazy shift. I occasionally get a mis-fire when i change fuel types (all 98 RON), but seems to like Shell V power. Sorry for going on...

I haven't any pics actually. will try to take some and post em.

Thanx

Try this post from Six wheeler................Hello,

I've found that to get the best kickdown response from my 300E, the throttle and transmission cables have to be adjusted "properly" (that is, to me, of course, but I could be wrong. Here's the procedure I did:

1. Take off the air filter
2. Slacken the throttle cable until it's completely loose.
3. Re-tighten until the accelerator pedal inside the car moves only 2mm before it actually moves the cable. (You have to feel this by hand, not by your foot.)
4. Back at the engine, remove the linkage return spring.
5. push the throttle linkage assembly as if accelerating, then gently let go, making sure that it doesn't go back to fully released position. (Do this BEFORE applying lubricant to the linkage and pivots.)
6. Now, slacken the transmission cable using the plastic adjustment nut, until you see little the rubber boot bending.
7. With the throttle linkage not back into fully released position, slowly remove slack from the transmission cable. Go all the way until the cable itself pulls back the throttle linkage to the fully released position UNDER ITS OWN TENSION.
8. Restore the throttle return spring back into place.
9. Install air filter and enjoy the responsiveness []

Disclaimer: Of course, this procedure could be all wrong, but it works for me. If it doesn't work for you or causes damage, don't blame me []

Thanks for the procedure, it would of been my next option, thanks again. I will try it, i understand the response will be better.

I hope it also helps the upshift delay (not just kick down). I looked else-where and some guys are replacing valves on transmission, some block off the vacum lines from switchover valve?? I want it fixed, no matter of cost of parts, as long as i can do the labour.
