1994 E320 Wiring Harness Symptoms

Hey Guys,

I have found this forum to be very useful and as such I wanted to contribute a little based on my experience.

On my 94 E320 109kmiles, i had a rough idle that wouldnt go away and the car would sometimes bog down under power. I had a hint that the harness was bad but thought it wasnt so bad close to the engine.... Turns out i was WRONG! Eventually the car wouldn't start and then I towed it back to "Uncle Benz Hospital" better know as my garage then i proceedes to test for spark and then realized that 2 out of 3 ignition coils were not firing...so with a blade tore of the outer insulation of the coil connectors and bam! crumbs like bread- insulation of the harness. what i had seen elsewhere on the engine wiring harness was true.

Moral of the story:

When it comes to Mercedes-Benz, cutting corners is absolutely futile... If you see its bad change it! As an aspiring Benz tech, I was happy to discover that the harness could crumble to the point where the car wouldn't start anymore. I wish everyone on theW124 FORUM the best in diagnosis!!

Don't forget the ETA (electronic throttle actuator). It suffers from the same wiring symptoms and will cause electrical nightmares until it's been replaced. These later W124s are almost impossible to diagnose electrically until the harness & ETA have been replaced.

The ETA is VIN specific, depending if your has ASR or not.

What is the most prominant place for the harness to fail? Can this section be repaired and wires re taped or enclosed in a wire loom? What information would be needed to ensure compatibility?

Once it goes bad you would have to re wrap all the wires. They all cooked at the same rate. They will degrade from firewal to ungine, and there is a lower harness but its less of an issue due to less wires.

When I first waited to get mine i bought a sppool of wire and soldered it all together 1 wire at a time and did it in about 4 hours.

Worked great for the 2 weeks I used it.

If you see any issues on any of the wires you might as well take it out and do them all. It will be just a matter of time.
