86 300E fuel tank removal

OK, I'm stumped. Need to pull the fuel tank and have it cleaned along with replacing the strainer. I've disconnected the fuel feed from under the car at the tank, removed all the trim in the trunk disconnected the fuel gauge sender and pulled all the bolts from the tank. still cant get it out. been trying all day. I know I've missed something but can't locate it in on or under the car.

HELP

You gotta work at it as the fuel filler neck needs to be rotated and the fuel tank pulled out from the trunk starting with the left (driver) side first and up until the filler neck is pulled through the body of the car on the other side of the fuel door.

Did you also disconnect the fuel return lines as well???

Removing and installing fuel tank

It looks pretty straight forward. Maybe the parts listing will help you confirm you've gotten everything.

Check the trunk floor carefully right up against the tank, there are two raised bits. You need to lift the tank up about 1/4 inch to clear them. I spent ages tugging and pulling the first time, then by luck I got one corner out. It's one of those jobs that is nearly impossible the first time, then next time you can't understand why you struggled before.

Hope this helps, good luck, Paul

thanks to you guys the tank is out and will be off for cleaning in the morning. Cleaned the bejesus out of the strainer and am considering reusing it. Penny wise etc. It isn't the money, just don't want to wait for the part. When you say Mercedes Benz to a parts man here in 'Bama he runs screaming for is nascar bobble head to pray for my soul.

Don't step over dollars to pick up pennies. This is the best opportunity you'll ever have to take care of that fuel filter (strainer) which always gets neglected AND re-using it will probably cause a fuel leak from the rubber seal and/or the main fuel feed which got disturbed during removal anyway.

Thanks again to all. Everything was spot on. As a result will take the last bit as well and get a new stainer. Being here in rural Alabama Mercedes dealers are few and far between. Guess I'll try the usual suspects (autovancequestpa et al) and when that doesn't work I'll get online and try.

Just make sure you get a strainer marked SUPER (german for gasoline). Do NOT use one marked DIESEL as the strainer mesh is a lot bigger.

The strainers are only available from the dealer (no aftermarket manufacturers) last time I checked, and use a new main fuel feed line if you're still using the original.
