Power steering leak and a stall
Well I figured out the power steering leak, which had been getting worse and worse. Not wanting to take the 19 year old current steering gear apart to just replace the seals, I had planned on replacing it with a rebuilt unit but got under there today and found that almost all of the allen screws on the back-end of it were loose. Tightened them up and presto, no more leak. The leak got so bad though that it drained the entire contents of the PS pump in a day. My son was driving the car yesterday, came around a corner, the power steering unit making a lot of noise and being hard to steer then the car just shut off. No lights on the dash, just a complete loss of power. He got it stopped ok and was able to start it right back up and drove it home. This leads back to the beginning of the story, in checking things out I found and solved the PS leak issue.
Could the strain on the engine from the power steering pump being completely out of fluid be enough to cause the engine to stop? Never had a stalling issue like this before, although we have not had the car very long. I checked the crankcase position sensor and according to some info I found on this site and others, it seems to be OK. I measured it's resistance both cold and warm. It's a 91 so it does not have the separate fuel pump relay, I can hear the fuel pumps running, although due to the way it shut down I would tend not to think it was a fuel related problem.
Any other ideas or suggestions of things to check? My son is only 16, he handled the car losing power, in a turn, on a busy street very well. I'd like to make sure it doesn't happen again though.
