The W124 is the last Mercedes vehicle line that embodied the engineering-driven sentiment "The best or nothing". This is evident in the quality of design and materials used in making these cars. It's why you can have a 124 that has 300K, 400K and more miles and keep running with obviously 100K and more miles left in them while still remaining in much better physical condition than many other cars that are newer with fewer miles. It's the craftsmanship in engineering, and the quality of the materials used. They made their cars with the intent to be the best and longest lasting. Mercedes had to tone it down after about the mid-1990's in order to compete with the lesser brands like Lexus, Infiniti and others who were making cars with cheaper labor and cheaper materials. If you have a W124 you have one of the finest cars ever made. And more dependable than a Rolls-Royce. The great thing about them is that they are more affordable now than a lot of people think. The biggest key to owning these W124s today is working on them and maintaining them yourself, learning how if necessary, rather than paying someone else to do it for you. Mine is 20 years old, runs like it is new, and looks better than most other cars out there.
