1994 E320 rough running

Hi Guys,
I need some help with a 1994 E320. It has the straight six 300E engine.
The car starts easily and runs reasonably well when cold but runs roughly when warm.
The idle is irregular , too fast in park or neutral, dropping sharply when in drive and worse when the airconditioning is turned on or power steering in use, in other words whenever a load is put on the engine.
When the car is warm I have to turn off the airconditioning at traffic lights and put the car in neutral so I can rraise the revs to stop it dying.

I have replaced the idle air speed control valve relay and cleaned the idle valve.
I have replaced the high tension leads, distributor cap , and rotor.
Still no change.
Also the car blows black smoke when floored..it is powerful and smooth when pushed but the smoke looks like a Mitsubishi Pajero diesel( with apologies to Mitsubishi owners).

I intend to re check the operation of the idle valve, and maybe replace the oxygen sensor.
Am I barking up the wrong tree?
Any help will be appreciated thanks.
Cheers.

rough idle

Have you replaced the wiring harness on your 94 yet. They are
biodegradeable and give owners fits. Also check every vacumn hose and
if it was me I would replace it.Checked your OVP yet??How about
the injector seals and the injectors themselves? Lot of things to
check out.

Sounds to me like the computer still thinks the car is cold when warmed up?

17thabn is on the right track I am sure. But black some makes me think it is the harness and the brake on th cam isnt holding the timing right and blowing smoke. The oil guide tubes on the head could be bad also. Letting oil right into the cylinder, if its black smoke.

You need to pull the error codes from the HFM and E-GAS systems, clear the codes, and see which ones return. You'll need a hand-held LED code reader, and the code list is in this document:

Yep. I'm thinking disconnect the battery for a while (don't forget your radio code) to let the computer reset. Should pull up some codes after.

Disconnecting the battery does not necessarily reset the computer. At least on the W124 with V8's, it will NOT fully reset, the adaptation values and codes will remain. I'm not sure if the HFM/M104 is the same or not. You need the code reader to verify that codes are cleared, and the code reader can also be used to reset adaptation to mean values. Details are in the PDF file linked above. You won't be able to view the adaptation values (or any other live data) without a digital scanner though.

Black smoke is unburned fuel (mixture way too rich).

thanks for all the responses..the car is sure to be running rich..fuel economy pitiful. Idle in park or neutral is way too fast. Wiring loom original ( have had various annoying electrical malfunctions like electric seats, interior light, steering column adjust works when it wants to). Car is in Cebu, Philippines where the local "mechanic" comes to the house with a screwdriver. Mercedes dealership closed down several years ago...no Mercedes compatible diagnostic available.
I will put injectors on list to review..timing cam? can that be fixed with a screwdriver?
