1994 E320 - can't pull dianostic codes

My 1994 E320 has had the 'check engine' light on for some time. Than it sat as I procrastinated fixing the leaking galley plug. After that was all done, I drove it few times - and BAM there's the light again.

It never seemed to effect gas mileage, or drivability.

I've read I am supposed to pull the cover off of a box in front of the battery - ok, found it.

Now, I am supposed to have the key on, but engine off - ok, done.

I am now supposed to hold the little button for 3-4 seconds, and this mystery light next to the button should start blinking in sequence. Won't happen.

I even tried the 6-8 seconds to reset the light. Won't work either.

Is there a way to see if this mystery port / switch / light is even plugged into anything??

Am I doing this procedure wrong?

With car "on" are the dash warning lights lit up? When you push the button down does the LED light up, then go off when you release?

Yes, I made sure the dash lights (and the annoying buzzer momentarily) was on. The LED does not light in any way, nor does holding the button for 6-8 seconds (as per instructed on another site) reset the dash warning light after cycling the key. This is making me think this whole thing may be disconnected from somewhere.

Would I be able to use a voltmeter to see if any of the other ports / holes are getting voltage, to verify this thing is even plugged in to something?

Is the engine running?

Pin 1 is ground and pin16 is 12v, not on all 16 pin connectors, but should be on a 1994. If you can't get a circuit there it's dead, which could be a fuse.

I was told to do it with the engine not running, but the ignition in the "on" position.

I had several lights when i first purchased my car. At first i could not get the light to come on at all. I found a post that said

1) Hold the button down for 3 sec.
2) count the blinking light.
3) hold for another 8 sec to clear code.
4) cycle trough until you see the first code again
5) Turn car off and restart and engine light should be off.

I worked every time

Similar problem on my 94 E320..... the CEL is on on the dash and when I press the button down, the red LED is on. When I let up on the button the LED goes off. No matter how short or long I hold it down, the result is the same. The LED goes off as soon as I let up on the button and never flashes. I am doing this with the key on, engine not running.
