w124 engine need overhauling, what actions to take

I have a w124 300CE-24

After low oil pressure and low oil itself my engine need to be opened and major money needs to flow. It's at the dealer now and they'll come up with €€ numbers tomorrow.

I'm looking for some alternatives (deliver them another engine and swap it for example)

Few questions (in order of probably achievability ) :
- What is needed to swap in a m104.980 3.4 AMG? Looks the same to me, and as far as i know uses same injection.
- What is needed to swap in a m104.941 3.6 AMG?
- What is needed to swap in a m104.99x (standard 3.2 l)

Low-mileage 300-24 engines seem not to exist much, though i could just get one of those too (relatively cheap solution).

Its all about electronics, what is the engine most similar (from the management perspective) to your engine?

either way, I would not do at the dealer as it will be not worth it financially

I have no experience swapping mercedes engines, or in what are the differences. But i tried to swap the engine of my other car once, and learned the hard-way that the best approach is to have a complete donor vehicle so that you could carry over any missing parts or electronics.....

some of the other members will respond to this in a better way, there are a lot of experienced members here...

keep us posted and good luck !

90, 91 and 92 300SL's are running the same M104.98 motor as you have. That's assuming your CE is in that year range. Your profile isn't filled out so it makes it a bit more difficult. Finding the AMG motors is going to be another issue. If you do, you'll need all the electronics and harnesses to go with it. Same thing applies for the 3.2L. No horsepower increase with that route, just some additional low end torque and a lower redline.

Good Luck,

Jayare

My car is from '92. but all the 300-24's were the same as far as i know.

That wiring harnass etc goes for the 3.6 AMG and the 3.2l m104.941.

But what about the 3.4l AMG m104.980? From the looks of it everything is the same except the block. There is on for sale on ebay, expires in 6 days.

If the ebay item checks out and it's less money that the dealer re-build (no question about that), then go for it. Check if the seller has the electronics or knows where the doner car is, just in case.

Good Luck,

Jayare
