how do you understand the chassis number to purchase parts

I have come across several sites where they ask what your chassis number is.

Like most since I have a w124 they will say it is a 124.090,or 124.092 etc

Yes I agree it is a 124 but that is not what they are asking

The numbers they are asking is for example to B862121 chassis

or, it will say from B862122.

So, if the case as mentioned is what chassis YOu have and you say it is easy a 124.090

I believe that yes it is chassis number 124 but what I really think is when was the chassis made in terms of when the 1st model rolled of the line.

Basically what serial number is it starting from 1 when it was made the 10th model the 200th model or the 917 th model.

From the questions I have asked previously on a few threads many have mistaken my question for the chassis body style for the production number.

Reason I know they have mistaken is if you got say 100 people viewing the thread and nobody replies. Obviously they are thinking how dumb do some research you have a 124 but Iam not going to add to your idiotness.

So now that I have addressed the question how do you decipher the the letter and then the numbers after it especially if it does not have a B to start out with.

Anyhow what does the "B" stand for in the chassis number?

What does the "F" stand for in the chassis number.

So when the parts guy ask does you chassis number end at B862121

Or does it start after B862122 and I tell the guy I do not know here is my chassis number F267684

Is the guy gonna be able to give me the right part.

I do not know because I did like so at a parts guy directly from a MB dealer and he referenced it as 124.090.

He also gave me the wrong part..

Iam assuming that because My number starts with an "F" it is after" B" it is no matter what the part that is for B862122.

I also had another person say that you substitute the "F " for a" B".

OK lets go there.

If I do that then the number F267684 is really B267684 and now you would be referencing a part that fit the description of your chassis number ends at B267684

Therefore I will give you part X because it fits to chassis number B862121.

Unless Iam reading a foreign language or this is some secret MB language that is dare not spoke of.Some one please explain because 124.090 etc is the body style number not the exact number your car was made coming off the line:confused::confused::confused::confused:

What they are really asking for is the last 7 digits or your VIN - that is the 11th through 17th digits of your 17 digit VIN. The 11th digit (7th from the end) is the assembly plant, aka plant code. The 12th throught 17th digits (last six digits) are the production sequence, aka sequential serial number. The last 7 digits of your VIN are the same as the last 7 digits of your full chassis number, which is a rather obscure number.

For the 124 series plant codes A thru E are for Sindelfingen. F is for Bremen. 124 wagons were made in Bremen and have their own sequential serial number starting with 1. 124 sedans, coupes and cabriolets were all made in Sindelfingen and started with serial number A000001 and ended with Cxxxxxx - in other words they made over 2 million of them, a million As, a million Bs, and less than one million Cs. 124 wagons started with F000001 and never got out of the Fs, less than one million total.

To make matters worse the assembly plant number is unique to the first 3 digits of the VIN. The information above is all for WDB VINs during 124 production. Nowadays for WDB VINs Sindelfingen is A thru D and E is Juiz De Fogo in Brazil. However if your VIN starts in 4JG, as for an M-class, an assembly plant A means Vance, Alabama.

But for 124s all you need to remember is that A-Cs are one repeating sequence and Fs are an entirely different sequence.

'made in japan' ? don't you mean sold in Japan ?

to the OP, 124 is the family, 124.066 or whatever is a specific model (thats a 300CE/E320 cabriolet). The VIN should give the full details on the parts, but its unlikely anyone other than a mercedes dealer or parts specialist would properly decode these. The best way IMHO, is to get access to the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog), and enter your VIN, then look up your parts. EPC will give you the 'data card' for you car by VIN which has every option, engine number, etc that was installed at the factory for your specific car. Certain parts will have multiple options, and give a range of VIN numbers (or engine numbers, or transmission numbers)

For instance my 124.066 is a 1993 "300CE", and has pre-facelift trim parts, headlights, etc, while 94/95 124.066's, sold as 'E320', have the post-facelift trim parts. My 124.026 (260E/300E2.6) is a 1990, and has the MAS relay module, while earlier ones had a separate fuel pump relay and whatever else the MAS includes.

Actually it's the last eight characters of the VIN that are needed. The EPC uses these to determine serial number breaks for production changes.

Your car actually has two identifying numbers, the VIN, which starts with a bunch of letters such as WDB and your FIN, which uses model number designators after those letters. Mercedes uses the FIN internally, but you can see that the last eight characters are the same no matter what.

For example:

VIN: WDBCA25D8LA534588

FIN: WDB1260251A534588

The VIN has country origin identifiers, the FIN does as well but then incorporates the actual model designation. In this example, it's for a 126.025, which is a 300SEL.

Hi Trevor,

all W, A, C,S 124 cars are manufactured in Germany. Post your FIN (VIN) and I look up the datacard. The order number which is part of the datacard will show the dealer who ordered the car, and to which contry the car was exported.

My car a 300 CE-24 with the M104.980 engine has a order number
9 297 11580.
9 = the cars was ordered in 1989
297 = the car was ordered from an employee of Mercedes-Benz
11580 is just a number

For example:
9 838 xxxxx
838 means the car was ordered from a MB dealer in Japan

9 536 xxxx
536 means the car was ordered from a MB dealer in Great Britain

Best regards
Marcel
