Battery size! Group 49 or 48?

I have a brand new group 48 battery in my 95 E320 wagon. It fits in there but not snugly, not like it should. After reading on here, I have come across a few posts that indicate this car SHOULD have a group 49 battery in it. Can someone confirm this please and make sure this is true of my year please? Thanks.

I believe its true for all years of the W124. The group 48 battery will pass and is acceptable but it usually has a lower CCA, might be a concern for you if you live where it gets cold.

I took the group 48 battery back to Costco and bought a Genuine Mercedes Battery from the Dealership -- I asked them to bring the price down and they did ($130). BOY LET ME TELL YOU THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. The Mercedes battery is huge! It fits perfectly right in the slot whereas the little 48 from Costco left way too much room for sliding around. And there is a difference in amperage and Cold Cranking amps. The Mercedes battery will last much longer. Thumbs up for going with Mercedes batteries. And as far as going aftermarket...I have seen several posts where folks have said a group 49 is the correct size for this car, even though battery catalogs say group 48.

Can You post the part number of that Mercedes battery?

Perhaps 0015418001 or 0045414601?

Maybe a photo? Is it a new type VRLA battery?

The photo (not actually one I snapped) about sums up the size difference which I am referring to. Kinda like a schnauzer meeting a German Shepard. The battery I purchased from Berrier Mercedes here in Bellevue is sort of a transparent white instead of black as seen in the picture.
