2.5L OM602 diesel I5 engine

I have a friend who owns a 93 mercedes turbo diesel. Its leaking major ammounts of oil through the exhaust. The car has relatively low miles and i'm just wondering what might cause the leak. Head gasket(not sure if there is moisture in the oil),valves, cracked piston or bad turbo?

Based on my recent experience start with the turbo. Likely leaking oil out the back seal.

Yeah, I once bought a "rebuilt" turbo from ebay that blew prodigious amounts of oil out the exhaust. The seals had been improperly installed, so that the pressure-fed oil supply just leaked directly into the exhaust stream.

The early OM602 engines were prone to some headgasket issues that leaked oil from the chain vault to #1 cyl, but oil in the exhaust would lead me to think you've got a problem with the turbo.

I might buy it from him but i spoke to him today and he said that the turbo was recently rebuilt and it did not fix the problem. It has very low miles compared to my 87 w124.
