w124 td diesel tank filter

I have a 1989 250 TD and have been having some problems with fuel blockages. ( see previus post for details)
Anyway I finally got the towbar undone enough to be able to get at the drain plug under the diesel tank. Next problem is I can't shift the plug at all.

1) can any one confirm that the plug undoes anticlockwise as seen from below (spent a lot of time there today ;-) ) ?
2) any hints on getting the thing to move - I tried heating it up a bit with a blow torch but didn't want to over do it ?

I hate to add to your woes, but after you've cleaned the tank filter & got everything running OK, beware of the injector spill pipes blowing off! My 300D had this problem a few hundred miles after I bought it and I eventually discovered that the fuel return line was blocked at it's end, inside the fuel tank!
Apparently the car had stood for 2 years with very little fuel in the tank and algae had grown in there. Somehow,, it was able to get through the system, but finally caused a blockage - and it also messed up the fuel level sender! The float was stuck to the bottom of the unit, but I managed to free it up. (I cured the blockage by cutting the plastic return pipe inside the tank!)

Thought some people might like to see the full horror of the strainer as extracted this morning :-)

Most of the gunge peeled off in a layer about 1/8 th inch thick

The car has enough power now to drive up the hill where I live - which is nice.

PS I have now swapped out all the non-metallic parts of the fuel system for new replacements, having previously done all the front lines.

That is incredible! I sure wish you had taken some pics of the job - after seeing yours, I may want to pull my tank strainer just to check its condition.
