Hello. Will the steering wheel for a 94-95 W124 fit any W124? And more important will it fit any W201? I am not thinking about the center "pillow" but the wheel itself fitting the same attachment spline? Thanks.
A few weeks ago, I removed the wheel from my 90 300E and fit it on my 86 190E 2.3 16V. The 16V had a Sparco racing wheel on it and the one off the 300E was identical to the OE wheel for the 16V. On the 300CE, I fit a wheel from a later model E400. NO problems with either and the fit is correct. Before doing any wheel swaping, make sure you disconnect your battery for at least 30min. You don't want any chance of there being any electrical charge left in a resistor causing the airbag to go off. And if you have an OE Becker radio, make sure you have the code on hand before disconnecting the battery.
That "cheap" center horn pad you want is the airbag.. Cheap & airbag do not go together.. If you can kill the order, do so until you have all the need parts on hand. The airbag from the dealer is over $1000.00. The seller also states that the wheel will NOT fit all W124's and to call. Follow the sellers advice.
Please take a few minutes to fill out your profile. Believe it or not, it is very helpful to do so.
Here is some help for you. All the wheels from 1992-1999 are interchangeable, assuming you have a matching airbag. That said, you can take a 1999 wheel/airbag and install it on a 1992 Mercedes. You would need to use your horn contact ring and fit this to the 1999 wheel. If your car is earlier than 1992, then you would need to source a 1992-1993 horn contact ring to use with the 1999 wheel. 1994 was the year Mercedes changed to a different style contact ring, which is not backwards compatible with the earlier cars. Confused yet?
To complicate things even more, staring in 1997, the wheel/airbag design changed, so for example, you can not use a model 1995 steering wheel with a 1998 airbag.
All of this is more or less detailed on my web site, as I have used several different steering wheel on my 500e. Currently, I use a 1999 E55 wheel and a 1998 500sl airbag

Ok, so granted, I'm not the brightest bulb in the cluster, but not too long ago, I put a '93 300E steering wheel on my '87 300TD--that's cool, right...e.g. my airbag will work, correct? But, if I want to put a '95< steering wheel, I need to add a '94 and up contact ring?
Hi Jayare, I saw your post. I have a 1988 300CE. I bought an updated steering wheel. You make it sound easy to replace. Are there any special tools I need to do this? Got any pics? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I am going to assume that the 1993 steering wheel included the horn contact ring. If that was indeed the case, then its a simple bolt on for your 1987, as the airbag sensor and plug is compatible.
Now, if you were using a 1995 wheel, you would need the contact ring from a 92/93 steering wheel, then you could install it on a 1987 model.
Hi, I went plug-n'-play, 'cause the two contact rings looked exactly alike. I was just concerned that I may have overlooked something that rendered my airbag inoperable. Eventually I want to upgrade to the smaller diameter Sportline or other latemodel wheels, so your information is invaluable.

Yes, they do "look" alike, but unfortunately, the early contact rings don't fit the later wheels.
