400E/E420 - possible to remove smog pump?

Hi,
is it possible to remove the smog pump from 400E/E420? I looked at the belts and it doesn't seem possible to "skip". I don't want to just disconnect it (it works), but the bearing is shot so I need to pull it out and reroute the belt some other way... but I found none :/

Has anybody done that?

I removed the smog on my 300E and bought a shorter belt, search by author for posts by me.

Yeah, but the belt arrangement on 300E will be quite different (M103 x M119 engine). Shorter belt "only" doesn't work in my case...

Looks like U got more luck with post only Bastumm answer my last one. I got the same problem 1994 E420 and I try to bypass mine too. What I noticed today my pump randomly start working when car is hot. Any ideas. It sound that is working during cold start ups but after I cancel it throw code after day or two. Maybe pump working for few seconds when engine is hot create a problem not damaged pump.I am lost Hopefully somebody can put some lights on our cases.

I don't know how it is supposed to work in the US, but in EURO version the smog pump is supposed to only come on for a short time after a cold start - not permanently and not when the car is hot...

thats what mine did, on startup it ran for some time then stopped and freewheeled the pulley but in my case the bearing on the pulley went bad, the pump was still good. I couldn't find a way to fix just that bearing or pulley so I pulled the whole thing out. Do you have a diagram of the belt for your model? Maybe I could figure a way to remove it for you if I saw the belt routing.

BAStumm: none online... I'll try to look one up tomorrow

yeah that's just what it does on mine - pump is fine, clutch is fine, but the pulley bearing is shot...

there's the v-belt routing, the smog pump should be the one on the left side of the picture - i can't think of a way to reroute it :/ maybe install just a pulley in the same place...

Farthest left and at middle elevation is your smog pump right? Below that is the alternator right? To the right of the smog pump is an idler pulley?

Dang that seems very similar to my car in the location of the items and route of the belt with the exception that the items to the left side are are at slightly different heights. On my car I was able to just remove the smog pump and use a shorter belt following the exact same route with the only exception of bypassing where the smog pump used to be. Have you compared this drawing to your car? Maybe it is not completely accurate in the height of items.

I also think it would be possible to repair the pulley by purchasing new bearings if a guy could figure out how to get the pulley off. I investigated shortly on mine and couldn't figure it out, course I didn't spend much time because I had already realized I could eliminate it and knew it would not affect emissions testing here locally.

I was told the bearing was highly atypical and only to be found in certain kinds of fridge compressors... not sure about this but I don't need smog pump anyway

It's hard to see anything on my car, but it looks quite accurate. I'll need to get radiators off to see exactly how it looks...
