I have a 1990 W124 230e which was recently restored with replacement of fuel pump and a thorough check up at the garage. The engine is running fine but I find that after running for a distance there was some smell of petroleum near the left rear wheel. The smell was not strong and just detectable when I got close enough to the wheel. Take it back to my mechanics and he has checked it again and cannot find any leakage of fuel. What can I do now? Take it to another mechanics or just live with it. Many thanks for the advise

Strange that you only notice it on the LEFT side... because the fuel pump and filter are just near the right rear wheel!
How about inside the trunk? do you smell petrol too?

Thank you for your reply. I am from Hong Kong and that's a right-sided drive car. But when I look underneath yes I think the fuel pump should be near the right rear wheel. There was no smell inside the trunk nor the bonnet, and in fact you have to kneel down and get quite close to the left rear wheel to get this smell. The position is more close to the exhaust pipe and the former owner has replaced a new one. Not sure if this is related and really don't know what's happening
