Happens more (or is more noticeable) at lower speeds, but I often get a fast rattle from the lower right side of the engine when I step on the throttle. It started a few weeks ago and has gotten a little bit worse since it started. I'm wondering if this is a valve lifter problem? However, it leaks no oil whatsoever. 194k miles.
My '95 E420 is really overdue for a full tuneup, and has a very slight squeak from the serpentine belt (due to a couple of minor cracks), but there are no other obvious problems. What else might it be?
There's no need to replace a serpentine belt unless chunks of the ribbing are missing. If you replace a multi-vee belt every time the ribs have cracks you'll need a new one every six months!
As far as rattling, are you sure it's comng from inside the engine? Could be a cat heat shield or even the one that protects the steering idler arm.
Yeah I have no plans to replace the belt until the squeaking is unbearable.
I don't know if it is inside the engine, but I do know I only hear the rattle when I step on the throttle. I do not hear it cruising. When I take my foot off the gas, the rattle stops. I really don't know what could be causing this.
A couple of other notes: I usually change the oil myself, using Mobil 1 synthetic, but last trip to the indie shop I had them change the oil. They used Castrol GTX. It's been about 4500 miles since then and I am going to put Mobil 1 back in soon. From some of the reading I've done today, this might cure valve noise - the question is, is it valve noise? Since it only happens during acceleration, not steady cruising?
