I want to remove the trim from the rearmost side windows of my E280 estate - the trim that runs above the window and down the rear edge (it needs painting).
Before I break it or the window trying to prize it off could someone tell me how it should be done?
Thanks Toby
I prefer to have personal experience when posting an answer to a question but you've bumped twice so here goes.
The service manual says that you need only remove the two or three phillips screws that are visible when you open a rear door and then pull/prize the trim strip from the glass rubber seal. That's it. There are no internal fasteners or pitfalls. Let us know how it goes.
FWIW, I have been told by two body shops that a respray of these vehicles requires rear side glass removal. Why? It seems that the body flex causes movement between the rubber and the body pinchweld. This wears through the paint and the water wicks in to cause rust. My 88 TE #1 doesn't show the problem (about 100k miles) but TE #2 (210k miles) does.
Thanks for your help - if that piece of trim is removed will the window be loose or will the car still be driveable without the window falling out?
cheers
Again, I haven't done this personally but from what I've read you should have absolutely no trouble driving the car with the trim strip removed. It seems that significant effort is required in removing the gasket/glass.
