Yep! 88 260E (with a complete 88 300E drivetrain) packed it in this evening.
I'd completed 62 miles of a 63 mile trip with no symptoms except for the hard upshifting that's been going on for a few weeks. 2 toddlers asleep in the back and *wham-o* it's all over. Smoke (lots of it), engine temp jumped to 100C, and the engine ran normally but the trans didn't answer.
I had the car on a lift today to install new exhaust and was happy to see that my trans leak repairs of a few months ago had done the job just fine. But now it really doesn't matter, does it?
So where do I get the rebuilt unit? Someone here had posted about buying a Silverstar unit IIRC but they hadn't installed it yet. Looking for some input here before the phone calls start tomorrow.
What caused it? Old age! Just under 200k on the trans so I'm not complaining. The timing is rotten, though, since I sold my 97 Buick last week to slim down the fleet.
As for a used one, I'm not feeling that lucky right now. I have an 88 300E parts car but the car was undriveable when I bought it so the trans condition is unknown. Too risky for all the labor involved. BTDT.

You sound mechanically inclined- I think you'll find that the best deal comes with pulling the tranny & torque converter yourself and bringing them to a shop for professional rebuild... Then re-install yourself.
After shipping, you might find that the cost is comparable. And there's less risk involved with taking it to a known shop in your area than doing the mail-order thing.
Has anyone heard anything good or bad about an Adsit rebuilt transmission? I talked to one of their trans techs (Reece) and was getting good answers to my questions and feeling pretty good about their work (from a talking perspective).

Were I you, I'd PM Germanstar or jhodg5ck. They'll clue you in to where a good rebuilt transmission comes from, likely can sell you one.

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
I have a 91 300e i bought with a bad trans. I found a used one out of an 87 260e for $500. It cost me another $570. to get it installed. The kicker is, the trans that was in the car when I bought it was rebiult in '04 and didn't last 3 years. I am just hoping this one will last. It only has 90,000 miles on it.
How weird. All 87-89 260E models use transmission (722.409) and then the 90-92 300E 2.6 models do, too! I never would have guessed it.
The 86-88 300E uses a 722.320 but no later model years use this one. That really cuts down on my potential donors.
I guess I'll pass on the Adsit trans and look elsewhere. The stuff I've read is worrisome to say the least. Too bad because the transmission could be great. I guess they need to work on their customer service.
