Hello everyone ! I have a 1993 300e with the 3.2 m104 . if i shut the motor off for more than 1 hour or so and restart it i get what appears to be a timing chain slap . or at least that is what it sounds like . it goes away the second that the oil pressure builds in 1-2 seconds . i run 5w40 royal purple . the car has 155,000 miles and a perfect maintinence record . my theory is that there is a bad check valve in the oiling system causing it to drain out when the engine is shut off . any ideas ? is there a check valve in the oil filter housing ?

you should be using Mobil1 15W50 with 155K miles. If you refer to factory recomendations for lubricants you will find that 15w50 is suitable especially going into spring time.
Intriguing oil weight discussions aside your car has a problem and you need to find out where the noise is coming from You need an assistant and a stethoscope. If it does it every hour you should be able to find it quickly. Bad oil check valves are more commonly associated with early 119 motors but you do have one, and it would be fairly inexpensive to just replace it. You should wait too long to get the valve cover off to have a look.
my engine seems to like the royal purple .. so is this check valve in the housing ?? the one thing i love about spin on filters is the fact that you are replacing the valve every oil change !
i live in florence thats in burlington county .. central jersey . i have run 15w50 before of several different brands and it does not seem to change at all .
I don't see how the oil you are using is the wrong weight. I've been using 0W-40 or 10W-40 Mobil 1 for a long time. My car has 208K miles and no sign of timing chain problems. I guess you could try Mobil 1 to see if the noise dissapears but if not, you have to repair it.
