I have no doubt you take your job seriously, as evidenced by this post, but you're ducking the substance of the issue - thinner is more likely to leak down, thicker less likely to leak down. Using conventional oil in a 1993 104 motor is not a high risk experiment - very much factory approved.

You seem to have missed the point, yet again, the repair comes first and then the oil change. Without the repair, changing oil viscosity will not help anything. Agreed? Very much factory approved? which factory? Volkswagen? Most certainly not MB or BMW or the lesser Audi for that matter.

See my post #6. Factory approved meant Mercedes approved - see USA Approved Engines Oils here - Mercedes-Benz Engine Oil Recommendations

Yeah, I hear you Eric. I told my neighbor, who I discovered pouring Slick50 into his engine, you can't fix a mechanical problem with a chemical solution.

Adjusting the viscosity for startup may indeed change the degree of noise but may not be the proper fix. How about temp? Does this occur when the engine is still near operating temp or just on cold start? My 104 makes a whishing sound on cold startup I finally traced it to the fan clutch. I was sure it was an internal engine deal.

There is something about 104's that the timing chain guides wear as well the tensioner can max out from chain stretch. The noise would be constant and not heal itself.

China! They have MB's in China? And English speaking techs? Must be a tough gig working with the locals if you're haven't mastered Chinese.

Everything in life is a tough gig mate, ive been here 14 years and my wife is chinese, im english. As for MBs in China lol, we probably have more MBs in this one city than you have in the whole county. Thats county and not country lol.

We have CLK,CLS,SLK,229,220.140,GClass, M class to name but a few, we also specialize in BMW

On the 104 engines the tensioner and guides do wear but its not a major problem. Im thinking that your problem may be a cam follower but not sure yet.

"Thats county and not country"...

Thanks for that clarification, I nearly fell out of may chair! Interesting info. must be a challenge in such lands.

(dumb-wanker-Yank question) Is China right or left-hand drive? And the big one, how much is a gallon/liter of high octane in Euro or US$?

China drives on the right so its left hand drive cars, but we also have cars from Hong Kong which are right hand drive cars. The price of fuel varies from day to day so dont ask.
