So, it looks like many guys here have already went through with this problem... What's your mileage when this happened?
Were there other incidents that made your car to make you stranded? As I said previously, I only became stranded twice in 16 years of ownership. First time was due to a broken distributor cap that made me stranded in the freeway. That time, the engine gradually lost power and I was able to slowly decelerate to the shoulder.
What more problems can I expect to see (197K miles 1991 300E) that will make our cars stall, so that I could take some preventive measures and have parts replaced?
Cheers!
I would get a couple of cans of bg44k. I use it once a year. at mid year interval i use a bottle of techron.
i would carry a spare fuel pump relay. As a preventative measure you might consider changing the fuel filter. That said, I have one on the shelf and I haven't changed any of mine.
I am sort of lucky. when one of my cars has an issue, i can pick and pull from another and trouble shoot that way..

bg44k? I'll check it out.
wow, you got a stable of nice E's in your family. Very nice.

I like cars that I can understand, and that are easy to work on.... my son is becoming quite knowledgeable at the age of 20.
Past 1995, i don't think I will own a Mercedes, since I don't understand electronics.
In the past year, we put 1200 dollars in parts and maintenance in the three.... about 37,000 miles of use.... about .03 mile.... depreciation... maybe 500 dollars among the 3.
Good luck

I bought a 1989 300E, after the paperwork was done I drove it straight to the gas station to fill up. When I went to start it it turned over but did not try to start.
I remembered from one of these forums I had read the day before that the computer would not work without enough voltage. I pushed the car over to the side of the station and walked the half mile home. After attaching the jumper cables and letting the battery charge for five minutes the engine started right away.
Before I bought the car it had spent time sitting on the lot, going on short drives around the block never getting a full charge. I took it back by the car dealer and told them what had happened and the owner took his battery voltage tester out to the car and tested the battery which had just over twelve volts by this time, after an hour driving. With the engine running the voltage was 13.7 which is right where you would want it to be.
With a Battery Minder which charges at a low voltage it took almost a day to reach full voltage.
I would buy a voltage tester to keep in the glove box. It will answer many questions about how much voltage you have and if the alternator or regulator is working.
