Just back from the MB dealer. My tach is dead and the mechanic says it is the tach unit not the sender. New MB price installed is $939. Yikes.... The mechanic told me that there are places to rebuild them but did not have a name. Anybody have any experience or knowledge on this. Thanks......
It's time to start calling junkyards. You can probably get an entire used instrument cluster for a couple hundred bucks, tops. Find a U-Pull-It yard and it'll be less than $50. The big question is whether the diesel tach is the same as that of a gas engine. What's the RPM range of your tach? Redline?
I don't have experience in this, but there are shops that can rebuild your tachometer. One place that is local to me, has been around for decades, and does excellent restoration of modern and classic automotive dash gauges is called Bob's Speedometer. Bob's Speedometer
I had a 93 300d and like you my tach died, not the sending unit. I bought a replacement from this seller for around $125 - $150 (included shipping and I had to send my dead one back) The replacement parts are bench tested and it worked perfectly in my car. If I remember correctly, it also had the integrated clock in the tach and that worked fine too. Definitely worth a look!
I did end up buying a 87 engine cluster on Ebay. When attempting to install the backing plate is slightly but importantly different. I ended up sending the tach to Bob's speedo repair. They say they can fix it for $300. I will let you know how it goes. I put the old 87 cluster on ebay to resell.
