Valve lifters- 300E 24V (1991)

At cold start of a morning I get noisy lifters for about 2-3 seconds. The rest of the day is fine. My car has 292,000K's on the clock and the engine is great. Uses approx half a litre of oil in 10,000K and is dry as a bone.......not a single oil leak.

My question is...............should I replace the lifters at this point or wait and see if they get worse? My Merc mechanic says to run synthetic oil which he says may help.

Any comments..................

Foot,

Not having any oil leaks is a good thing with your motor. When I aquired my coupe, I put synthetic in and it began to leak in all manner of places. The stuff was just too slippery. You don't mention what weight oil you are running. It may relieve the "ticking" if you change to a bit lighter weight such as 10/30 or 10/40.

Good Luck,

Jayare

Hi Jay,

I'm from Australia and in Summer because of high temperatures (30C +) I am using BP course 25w-60. In winter I use 10W-40. My Mercedes mechanic tells me synthetic oil may clean the lifters. Sure don't want to cause oil leak problems though, so maybe I'll just put up with early morning lifter ticks

Thank you for your reply.
