CV Joint Cover Separation

How (and where) does the cover separate on the outer CV joint?
I need to get this apart, clean, and re-lube pronto.

The inner was a piece of cake, put together the same way as a VW.
I can't seem to find the joint on the outer where the cover splits.

TIA

Sorry Charlie! No can do. The outer CV joint has that swaged-on metal reducer and then the boot clamps to that (and the axle shaft). AFAIK you have to cut the clamps to pull the boot back and clean/regrease the outer joint.

Ah. That might explain why it didn't succumb to my loving touch.

Thanks. Now I know.

My right, outer CV Joint is making noise when wheel is fully turned.

consulted 2 independent mechanics - as well reserach on-line - and the only option is to replace the entire axle ($1100). One mechanic recommended checking back with him in 6 months to see if individual part becomes available.

any advice regarding urgency to replace this? experience with other parts not being available or only through dealer and time for part to eventually come out?

Your car is not the W124 chassis. I think it's a W210. Those forum members are better suited to answer your question. I was about to say that I'm sure that rebuilt axles are available for your application but then I saw that it is a 4matic. And you haven't said whether the front or rear axle is noisy...
