My W124, 90' 230E has problem on the automatic transmission when switch to reverse gear, there is a light griding sound when reverse ( there is friction on reverse ) but the car still in motion, when apply the brake in reverse gear, the griding sound is significant and there is a little vibration and the car still in a little bit motion. This case only happened when the engine is cold and the car is parked for few hours. When hot engine the car runs normal. Does anybody know what happen to my car and let me know how to fix it.
Did you ever find out anything about your transmission? Mine is doing something similar:
1. when I leave the house in the morning the car goes into reverse and works fine that way
2. after driving for a little while (15 - 30 minutes) it won't completely engage reverse
I had to, just a few minutes ago, open my driver side door and give the car a push with my left foot while gassing it with my right foot to get the car to go in reverse. It feels like it wants to engage reverse and the higher I rev the engine the more it sounds like it is trying. Not sure if that is vacuum or the loss of the reverse band.
I'm already looking for rebuilt transmission dealers.
There is a seal "piston" common problem ,B3 I think ?. With cold thick fluid it will shift the piston ,once the oil gets hot it bleeds past the seal never applying full pressure to the clutch plates .Some Lucas additives help depending how bad it is .
Plan you parking facing up hill or drive through spot facing out . I think a junk yard tranny is 600 - $800 .A rebuilt unit NO core return $1300 -$1500 depending on shipping.

I saw that silver star transmissions had some rebuilts for that price range. The more I think about it I'd rather go that route than used. It doesn't seem worth it to ship the core back to them. From some posts I've seen they rarely find a transmission good enough to refund the $300 - $500 core return charge. But before I go that route I am going to try the Lucas transmission additive. Thanks for the input.
