Actually K&N Air filters dont do anything for my car due to the Oxygen Sensor only at 75 % throttle is the sensor turned off and when the K&N air filter is put in the oxygen sensor re-adjusts. I already have 2 twin magnaflow (2.5 inch) which is said to increase horsepower but decrease torque.
The problem you are having with torque is due to the size of pipe used. If you decrease the overall diameter a bit and use the single Magnaflow Cat and muffler you will get the same HP increase but will get your low end torque back. What you are doing is reducing your backpressure too much which eliminates a bit of the draw from the engine. I would bet that your topend [up around 130ish] graphs better as that setup that you have would work better for a topend application rather than a low end torque app.

Friend of mine has a W124 and the engine is dying. Rather than rebuild it, he's found a wrecked W126 420SEL with a good engine and transmission.
Could the 420SEL engine and tranny drop into the W124 wagon? Would they even fit? Is the driveshaft the same? What about the electronics and wiring harness? Could he leve the rear end of the 300TE in place?
Any other probems? Would this even be cost effective?

It is doable BUT it would require a bunch of harness work, computer work, a bit of inner fender work and maybe a bit more [for some reason I am thinking firewall]. If that is a 117 motor it is essentially a very detuned Hammer style motor application. In about two weeks Jono will be able to give you much clearer information on that fitment but I frankly would just get another M103/104 motor and put in. That can be done for Under $3K rebuilt. The other will require an open checkbook I fear.

There once was a parts delivery driver that came here with a 560 motor in an 88 TE. It sounded sicko! I really didn't take a hard look at it, but I know it has been done.
At the moment, I am trying to clear the fog in my head, as to remember which yard he came from.
I successfully have a C36 power-train in my 1988 W124 wagon. It's now about 6-years old since the conversion.
If I had to do it over again, I would have sold the 1989 for a 1993-1995 wagon which had HFM from the start. The conversion would have been so much easier.
She's factory perfect, though, even with OBD-II, and a CARB sticker to prove it!
I'm contemplating a M119 into a W124 wagon or 400E/500E turned into W124 wagon.
Converse Engineering in Maine, did a Ford DOHC V8 into a 1988 W124 wagon as well, turnkey I believe is about $15K with car!
Also, I've seen a 1999 twin-turbo diesel into a 1993 S350, so I'm sure if you have a W124 diesel this swap can be done as well (he used the injection pump from the stock W124 diesel, and the existing tranny, so minimal computer work).
This is a 1989 Mercedes 300 TE wagon that was recently completed. The original Mercedes straight 6 was replaced by a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII 4.6L 32 valve engine and transmission. This is essentially the same motor found in the later Mustang Cobras. The engine is a perfect match for the Mercedes as it is incredibly smooth and free-revving.
Its so good to see everyone getting behind the wonderful W124 and seeing what they can make of it with a little commitment.
Me and a good friend have been throwing ideas around for something a little different here in Queensland (AUS) of late and I was seeing if anyone has seen/heard of a 1UZ-FE (toyota/lexus 4.0L quad cam) conversion? I have heard of toyota 2JZ - GTE twin turbo conversions done in singapore and thailand, (not sure about AUS) but nothing on the 4.0L Quad cam front...
Anything on this matter, opinions or otherwise on either the 1UZ, 1JZ-GTE or 2JZ-GTE would be greatly appreciated.
i just bought a 92 400E and all i can say is WOW!!! 275 hp in the lap of luxury!!!! Anyway after several burnouts and 120mph runs on the freeway im outa fuel. what octane does this 400E run on?
