I have a '91 300e 2.6 that has a problem. It starts fine after it is warmed up but when starting it cold it acts funny. When i finally does start it will only idle. If i give it ANY gas it will die. after a about 2 minutes it will start to accept more and more gas untill it is finally running like it should. even though it is not mising I changed the plugs but that did not help. I thought I would post this before I waste a lot of time on it. btw it has 198000 miles on it but has been kept up well. The previous owner passed along the service records and reciepts. Any ideas?
Coolant temp sensors (there are 2) replace them both they are cheap. If that does nothing. Replace your fuel filter then move through your fuel system. clean your injectors, check injector seals, have a knowledgable MBZ tech examine your CIS distributor and lastly check function of fuel pump. It can be bench tested for flow.
Let us know.
let me guess here, The coolant sensors make the computer adjust the fuel/air mixture depending on how warm the coolant is? Can you tell me where the sensors are located on the 2.6 ?
OK. I found one of the sensors on the head facing upward, toward the rear of the engine. Can someone tell me where the other one is? I can't even find it on a diagram.
I just replaced the coolant sensor and the problem is not fixed. I cracked open one of the injectors while it was running and there seems to be plenty of pressure and volume from the pump. any other ideas?
Thanks for the info. I think it must be the ovp . I just ordered one last night because my fuse is not blown. I think my ovp is original because it only has one fuse. the new ovp's have two fuses. I will post the results.

I have the same problem with an 89 300E. I took the fuses out of the OVP and it started cold and ran great!!! But........ It started dying intermittingly and went from 22MPG to 16MPG. So I pulled the fuses again and now i'm gonna try this fix on the ICV. (Idle Control valve). Alot of people ask questions here and never post the fix. I will let you know what happens when I get this done. Probably during thanksgiving. Here is the link to the post on the ICV

Replaced the OVP tonight and the problem is solved!! It also made my ABS light go out. I guess it controls that also. The Idle is a little too high so I will have to adjust it but it starts fine now. Thanks for all the info.
