w124 wagon tailgate struts - DIY?

First off I just thought I'd say hello as I'm a new member to your forum, happy to be here!

Anyway, on to business:

The gas struts that lift the tailgate on my '95 E280 wagon/estate have given up the ghost.

When I went to see the local MB technician he advised that this would be a 3 hour job for them, this was owing to having to take down the headliner etc. I was a little dubious of that, and was reluctant to shell out £300, so I decided to source the parts independently and then look at other ways to get the job done.

The first option I'm looking at is DIY.

This job is outside of the scope of the Haynes manual, but there are instructions/photos on removing the tailgate, which they rate as a 2 out of 5 difficulty. I wouldn't have thought it would be necessary to remove the tailgate to change the struts but the procedure described in the manual does get me as far as getting the headliner down, but it's not clear how easy it will be to get at the mounting points for the struts from the photographs.

So I was hoping someone here might be able to give some rudimentary instructions or at least indicate whether this is a job I can do myself?

Cheers

the job isn't so difficult, instead it requires a 5 out of 5 in paitence.. You don't have to remove the rear tail gate, but the headliner does have to come down.

Do you have the factory service CD's? They have a fairly good write up. I don't have the files on this computer but perhaps someone who does can post the pdf..

Thanks very much for the response. I really should have done a search before creating this thread as I found a fairly detailed set of instructions here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124...h-struts.html?
It sounds very fiddly as you point out, I will just have to keep reminding myself to hold on to my temper!

If anyone does have that .pdf I'd be grateful but I think I should be ok with what I've got now

I prop up the tailgate with a few rods , its like building a ship in a bottle . If its a bit rusty it will take a while.

I'm glad this was posted. As the weather suddenly got colder here in PA I'm sure that the hatch on my TE will be bonking me on the head soon.

Well, that's a job I don't fancy doing again any time soon!

Despite those detailed instructions. I still found it a learning exercise with the first strut taking hours and the second less than 30 minutes.

My spine is not best pleased with me after all that contorting inside the boot
