There is not much chance of a "collector" wanting a car like that. Reality is that you can get a car like that for $5-6000 any day. ANY car that old needs some work and I can tell you a W124 of that vintage will need $2000-2500 of sorting out - I don't care who owned it.
I got screwed on mine about 3 years ago and gave the guy $3700 - with mediocre paint, ugly wheels, bad tires and 150,000 on the odo. Hey, I really wanted an I-6 MB TD...
$2300 later it was a nice (if still unattractive) driver. Three years (and another $800) later it has 188,000 on the odo and it's still an unattractive, totally dependable daily-driver. In fact, I have another car - a 2006 E320CDI - that I don't drive as often.
This thing is a great car. No doubt.
Your 1990 2.5 is a great car too. Problem is that there are a lot of great, newer Hondas on the road and they will dictate what your car is worth. Unless you find a bio-diesel lover (and they are trying to save pennies - so don't expect them to bid top-dollar) or someone who had one and lost it for some reason.
If you want top dollar, put it on autotrader for about $2000 more than you really want. If you get it, great. If not lower your expectations and get rid of it. It's just a car.
The car has been sold, it left my driveway last night. I got $11500 for it thought I should update all those who took time to respond to this post. Thanks all for you input once again.

Congratulations....
Exactly what I stated in my earlier post..."it's worth what one is willing to pay for it"
Based on your stated condition, the new owner got a whole lot of quality car for the price paid !!!!

That used to mean USD 7000 but with the exchange rate....
As the previous owner of the car (Atif bought it from me) If you saw and drove the car, you would understand why the car commands top dollar.
Yes Mark, the car was in excellent condition cosmetically, suspension, steering was in top condition no doubt about that but mechanically it was not what it should've been, I ended up spending $4000 on top of the purchase price of $12000 not including the $2500 for shipping and taxes to bring to the level and condition it should've been, replaced all the lifters and the abnormal noise never went away and then I ended up taking the head off to find that it had blown head gasket right where the oil comes into the head resulting in low oil pressure in the head and hence lifter noise.
It ended up costing me close to $19000 and my actual plan of building a Diesel AMG never materialized so got really frustrated and put it on autotrader for $12900, the first guy that offered $11500 took it, a lucky bastard got himself a brand new over engineered benz for the right price!
From all this frustration of months and months I have learnt my lesson and know for sure that I will never buy a car by trusting someone's word or without test driving it again.
I asked all relevant questions before deciding to buy it like:
Does the car over heat, Answer NO
Is the transmission jerky, Anser NO
Is the engine sound the way a diesel sounds, Anwer YES
And then was told that I was getting a hell of a car, my friends please tell me if this was true why would I sell it so soon. I rest my case, nothing personal Mark but I never approached you afterwords because the deal was done and I'm a man of words and trust that others will be the same so I gave you benefit of the doubt that you don't know your diesels, I personally think my initial offer of $9500 was a valid offer and therefore you will always owe me $2500 that I paid more than the market value of the car.
With this my friends I bid farewell to benzworld.org........
Good luck and best wishes to all including my friend Mark Fagus!
so Atif, you mean you bought the car without test driving it or even look at it before you buy it??
Yes, it was a mistake that costed me over $7000. No MB for me in the near future, will see if I can get an E320 CDI but next time around it will be a dealer car no more buying from members here. As a member here I thought I can trust fellow members and take their word but obviously I was wrong.
Didn't want to go in details or even bring this up but since the pervious owner took the liberty of posting on this thread I felt obligated to respond.
Atif, if you want to post on the board the happenings of events in your purchase, lets not censor out some of the events. Lets put it all out there.

1. Does the car over heat? Answer NO MY REPLY I live in the desert in New Mexico where it is typically 100 or hotter daily in the summer. When the car left my home it was NOT running hot.
2. Is the transmission jerky? Answer NO MY REPLY When you bought the car, there was 62,xxx miles. Car rcvd. its 60k service approx. 2 months before you bought it and my mechanic looked at the trans. and suggested I NOT do a transmission service on it because the fluid was PERFECTLY clean and the car SHIFTED AS SMOOTH AS SILK. I did however based on his suggestions, changed both the flex disks due to wear.
3. Is the engine sound the way a diesel sounds? Answer YES MY REPLY I have owned other MB diesels, and it did not sound any differently that any other diesels I have owned, driven, or heard running.
If you revisit the conversations we had prior to the purchase, you will recall that I:
A. Offered to provide you the name and phone number of the shop that had done the 60k service on the car just before you bought it so this shop could offer their insight.
B. Offered to provide you the name and phone number of the shop that had done the regular scheduled services on the car so this shop could offer their insight.
C. Suggested that either you come to see the car before you purchase it.
D. Have an independent service come inspect the car prior to purchase.
Did you take me up on any of the items listed above to learn more about the car? NO
I truly am sorry this did not work out for you. But I do not feel I should be considered at fault here.
