How did they compare to the later 500E, performance-wise? I see that AMG didn't do the big fender flares, etc. Did the extra litre make the Hammer the winner or did several years of mechanical and electronic advancements make a mere 5L do the job better? Or was it a case of raw hp vs. an overall refined package?
The 6.0 Hammer was and 375 hp, but you also had the option of a Gleason-Torsen LSD which the 500e didnt have.
The 500e had 326HP and used ASR for traction support.
The very limited E60 w124 had 381 bhp.

As CLK320S said plus the 500E had SLS suspension which is a bit more refined. Mercedes/Porsche did a bunch of changes [about 1800] to the 500E as it went through design/build phases. I keep finding them in the strangest places as I go through different 500Es and 400Es of the same era.
Balls out performance goes to the Hammer. Hammer was lighter by about 200 pounds [3635 vs 3855]. I think the 500E has a better tranny but that would be due to later technology.

I would think the 6.0 Hammer based on the M117 would not be embarrassed even by a later model E55.
Power seemed to be more conservatively rated by AMG at that time. !

I agree. It was a very strong motor in a pretty light car [ but only 300 pounds lighter than the 3900# 420SEL].
While AMG Germany rated their HP pretty conservative, AMG NA liked to promote the loudest dyno numbers they had and the two were not that much different.
I think the M117 AMG Torque numbers are where it shines as much as raw HP. Jonathan's 126 with M117 AMG motor is a rocket. Caused me to blow a motor mount keeping up one Sunday morning this past January.
At the time the monochromatic paint work was hallmark to AMG.
So few real AMG from that era, but thousands of impostors.
The E300 6.0 Hammer in todays dollars would cost $300K
Really only about 6 US Hammers made [4 Sedans, 1 Coupe, 1 Wagon] although there is a guess that a few more might have been done in Florida as specials for clients as AMG NA was sunsetting.
