a cozzie box is the 16v merc 190e box. also hear in england we had a ford sierra that was fitted with a ford cosworth engine, wich used the ford mustang gearbox, so i suppose that both of these could be called cozzie boxes!!
the long input five speed gearbox fitted to early w124s will handle up to 400 horses, but obviously if you regulary drive it like jessy james would have done then its gonna let go in the end the short input box broke from regular traffic light flyers, hopefully the replacement one (long input) will last longer
one further note; i have had my flywheel lightend by several pounds, so the engine should spin up very quickly. the two boxes take totally different flywheels.
Well I am Lucky, stubborn and stupid and sometimes the latter shines through, I happen to have 1 of the top turbo engine builders in the Unites States at my disposal for questions and what not...He told me point blank your engine can handle 9psi and be reliable for about 280hp...in stock form with correct fuel, needless to say I set out to prove him wrong $1280.00 later I am back at 9psi after failed attempts to run between 11-13 psi...
I push my cars to the limit everytime I drive it and the only car that I can't break is my 6.9...I have destroyed a 2.3 16V geabox with 280 Rear wheel Horse power
and I had not even began to abuse it yet....
do it Again & Again=2.3 manual 16v=and someone pointed out it indeed is just a simple bolt in affair to drop the automatic and drop in the manual.so having to swap out the 16v tranny every 2 years should be a piece of cake,2 beers+2hours done....
As ASE says "FIX IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME" Viper 6 speed manual...
ahh cosworth... cossie... that kinda makes sense now... hahahah
hmm a viper gearbox sounds interesting... but down here in australia... i dont know about its availability though... how much are viper boxes from the junkyard in US? stupid question.... above posts have stated viper gearbox for use with the M104.... so it should fit a M103? Which model of dodge viper btw? sorry for these newbie questions, but i just want to clear some confusion cuz in time i wanna execute a turbo/supercharged M103 W124, only time and money will tell. google just doesn't wanna give me satisfactory answers.
Year of Viper does not matter Prices vary from $600.00 up for a used one,I know of 1 wrecking yard right now that has 3 all asking $800.00,Pm me bellhousing needs...The 2.3 16v is a limted production car that is highly regarded here in the States so finding a used manual may require more work and expense that finding the Viper manual, not sure I never searched for a 16V manual gearbox..
The Viper is also highly regarded but easily wrecked even with experienced drivers behind the wheel,so they are common in late model wrecking yards....
The 4 Speed Automatic will handle 300 RWHP with a few choice mods...You won't like the W124 Supercharged...Turbo will keep you up at night wanting to take it out for another spin.

I need a little help guys so continuing on my MT search I was with the parts supervisor who found a part number starting with 126.... Its transmission number is 717.43 can this be mated with a M103? anyone have any idea when the W126's had 5speeds in Europe? He didn't give many details and is not sure what it really is since its a Euro tranny. What will it take to mate these different machines?
all the six cylinder 126s had a manual transmission as an option. mercedes hasnt used a manual transmission on a V8 since the mid/ late 70s and only on the 3.5 liter R109 SLs and some of the W116s. precious few of them exist anymore if any.
id wager theres little difference between the 126 and 124 manual transmissions.

yippe kai yay! I was sweating bullets since the number sounded like the 717.43-- 's of the revered W460 & W461 GClass vehicles from the 1980's and 1990's and I was mortified since the gear ratios may be so off! Now I have to take the next steps in the mearements and size on it. Phew thank you so much neanderthal

Thanks for the info, coastline. I'd hazard a guess that it should be maybe 2000AUD altogether for the box including shipping to australia....
I'd also hazard another guess that M104 and M103 only differ in head configurations but everything else remains the same, BUT i may be horribly wrong here though! ... i do know the M104 block is a lot weaker though. So... it should be possible for the Viper box to also fit a M103, right, but it also needs custom parts, like u stated, a bell housing?
Hmm... now that transmission part is almost covered... time to research on stronger diffs and drivetrain parts. I'd definitely love you if u could PM me some info diffs, drivetrains, LSDs, so as not to hijack this thread and sway it off topic. =D
m104 block is nothing but a slightly modified M103 block.
i remember reading the technical updates when the early M104 (3.0 liter) engines were released. this is back when i was wrencing on them. probably on a boring workday when i had to appear to be doing something. i was known for going to the "library" and just reading stuff. yes, our shop had a "library."
anyway, they had some small minor details that were different from the M103 block. stuff about the timing chain and oil squirters under the piston and so on. nothing substantial. for all intents and purposes they should be considered the same.
