Primer Pump on OM603 300td w124

Hi there,
i let my 87 300td with 140,000 miles sit for a month while i was away and now it wont start. i had the same problem on my last one where air would enter the system. I remember buying a special socket to purge/prime the diesel back to the injectors, but that was years ago and i dont have it anymore.
any ideas where I can buy one of these special tools and where it goes?

is there a way to avoid this in the future?

i got it working by flooring the accelerator, and cranking it in 20 second intervals. but since i travel alot and the car often sits for weeks at a time i need to figure something else out, this is a horrible way to waste a starter. Any ideas?
