Since is has been 95+ degrees here in the Denver area, I loaded the wife and kids in the 300e, tossed a tent, fishing poles, cooler, and sleeping bags into the trunk and headed west into the Rockies on the morning of the 5th.
Fully loaded, the bone stock 20 year old MB with 200,000+ miles, had no problem blasting us up U.S. 285 over Kenosha Pass (10,000 feet) into the North end of South Park. We ended up camping in the Pike National Forest near Jefferson Lake above 10,000 ft. It was 45 degrees when we got out of the car.
As we were setting up the tent, I had to stand and look at the 300e in amazement. Although she is 20 years old, she pulled hard the entire drive up to 10,000 ft with no issues - I literally passed car after car all the way to the summit, enjoying the growl from the six under the hood all the way to the top. This old Merc was a joy to drive up the winding mountain roads and I am reminded of why I love these cars so. Like a panzer tank storming up a mountain.
Great trip in a great car. Snowball fights in July - Gotta love the Rockies.
Only hiccup was the power antenna ceased working on the way back to civilization - oh well, I will just replace it and it should be good for another 200K miles.
