my 1993 300E has had problems with overheating with the a/c on while idling . i noticed that the left fan was not working at all . i did a voltage check and it was getting power and ground , so i replaced the fan assembly . it began working again with the new motor on it . but the problem persisted the same as before . i replaced the thermostat and coolant . nothing changed . finally weeks later i noticed that the new motor i had installed was spinning backwards ! i simply reversed the wiring for that fan , and now it cools awesome !
so if anyone else is having the famous "runs hot while idling " in your 124 check your fan rotation !!!!!!! thanks for all your help guys !!
When you replaced the fan, did you have the take the condensor off? I know the rad has to come out etc. I have the same problem, with only one fan working and it is getting warm here now. I have a choice of replacing the one bad fan or I have a "spare" double fan set I can install.
I'll appreciate any details you might want to share.
no, i did not have to take the condenser off . i did everything from the front of the car . first i removed everything in front of the fans , the metal support has 3 bolts i believe , 1 of wich is a pain to get to . i had to pull out the clips that hold the top of the radiator in order to get at this bolt . once this is out of the way , there is one bolt that holds that metal cooler line to the bumper . remove that bolt and then bend that line ever so slightly to get it out of your way . next you will have to remove the shroud around the 2 fans . i believe there are 6 push pins that hold this on , the bottom 2 are a real pain to get to . you may have to twist it around a little to get out . then i believe there are 4-8mm bolts that hold the actual fan assembly . the rest should be pretty self explanitory . i am not sure if this is the right way to do this job , but i know it works ! Hope this helps . all in all its not a real hard job .
