300e runs hot w/ ac on at idle .......

hello everyone ! i have a 1993 300e with a 3.2 . my first benz ,and also the first import i have ever owned . very nice car . but, there is one thing it really bugs me ... when i have the a/c on and let the car idle for a few minutes , the temp shoots up to 110-115 . once i start moving it cools right down . both my fans function as they should , the fan clutch , thermostat , and radiator are all new . from what i gather on this site this is completely normal . i think that is a complete total load of B.S. . pretty much no engine likes to be run that hot . my engine starts to ping pretty bad when it gets that hot . i might add that i run 93 octane .. i think the benz engineers missed the boat on this one . my previous car was a 92 5.0 mustang , drag raced in the middle of summer , with a 150 shot of nitrous never had any cooling problems . YES i know its gauges were accuate , they were all top quality auto meter gauges , they are known around the world for being the best . i will figure out a fix to this problem .....

Its common to hit 95 -105 stopped in traffic on hot summer days. I would check your aux fans if they kick in at higher temps ,I remember 95 - 100C they start . They also run anytime the AC is on , maybe a new thermostat and coolant make sure to bleed all the air from the system.

If I am at a stop light in 90 -100 f air temps with the aircon off , I can hear the aux fans kick in at 105c I think . Mine did improve with bleeding air from the cooling system . Even a good system ,will hit 100c with the aircon on.

The low volume high pressure likes 87c so 100c isn't that far off ,13c soo 20-21 F higher.

I was toying with the idea of getting a separate cooler for the transmission to see how much that would help in dropping the radiator temps.

Look at the aux fans. Besides seeing if they are actually running, see if they are running at correct speed. As they get old, they slow or worse, become intermittant. Also make sure they are coming on at the right temp.

For summer driving I have mine kick on any time the car is on. It is a simple switch and insures that things start from a cool set.

Also, I have been finding that the thermostats are failing about every two years, without regard to mileage so that little $15/15 minute job can be an engine saver in the heat of summer.

If the radiator is original and has over 100,000 miles on it, it most likely is not functioning up to spec also [sorry]. Uneven cooling due to buildup in the core can cause excess heat with the A/C on. It is one of those things that might just require a complete flushing, maybe twice to start getting the system back to normal.

Cooling system problems seem to be the primary complaint for many of the 124s. On my own cars I have replaced a stuck thermostat on the 300E that decided to spike in NYC traffic over the Memorial Day Weekend and I replaced one of the Aux fans in one of the 500Es just this evening as it was running about 45% of the speed of its twin.

WITH A/C ON and everything functioning correctly the temp guage should be at the 9'oClock position at all times even at 90 degrees/75% humidity.

Cool Harness

K6JRF Auto Page

I hate how mine runs hot too. It is fine when moving, but it can get hot in stop and go traffic, especially if I have been driving long and hard on a hot day. There is a solution, but I have not done it yet. I am going to do it soon. The solution is a “Cool Harness” auxiliary fan modification that you can buy from a fellow Benz owner. Use the link above and you can find out what you need to know.

Good link ,I think we are all in the same range the link says " In stop and go traffic 82F temps ,it never goes over 98C " .

I get 100C on the gauge in 100-105F air temp. in California traffic, sound close to me.

I agree coolant levels and thermostat replacement are good cheap fixes. I don't see MB radiators choking up with minerals , most run clean with high tech coolant .Much cleaner than american cast iron engines .

Remember red line temp is 120C --- 248 F

I agreed. It seems to me that the aux fans are giving problem. Check the fuse that connecting the aux fans too.

On my 400E, I also had an issue with the clutch for the fan, supposed to "grab" at higher temperatures, wasn't doing that. Jonathan replaced that and put in the mod for the aux fans, and its been fine ever since.

Also check the direction of rotation. The air should be blown from outside to inside the hood (like the natural flow of air when the car is moving). Use a small piece of newspaper and from the front of the car place it near the fan, then see if the paper is getting sucked in or blown out. If it is blown out, thats your problem. Someone may have reversed the polarity on the motor cables.
