idle/tickover problem advice needed

Most of the time my '95 E200 wagon runs perfectly, normally I just turn the key, don't use any throttle (gas) & it starts first time. Just recently on occassions when trying to start it, the car won't start unless I give it a bit of throttle (gas) whereupon it will run, but it has no idle/tickover & just stalls as soon as the revs drop to just under 1000rpm. Then after a while the car starts perfectly first time again & runs without any problems. I originally wondered if it was some kind of immobilisor problem, as I had a similar problem with a different car I owned once. I got out of the car, locked the doors, then unlocked them & tried to start the car. Lo & behold it started, but I don't know if it was just coincidence. Any help or advice really would be gratefully received as my wife has to use the car this evening & I don't want her having any problems out late at night with it. What would cause these symptoms.
Thanks in advance guys.

Ps there are no warning lights on the dash coming on advising of any problems.

If you have KE-Jetronic fuel injection on your car, it could be a problem with your idle-control air-valve. This is supposed to provide a separate, controlled air-flow for idling when the throttle is shut. If it is stuck closed, you will need to use the throttle to get it to idle, but the revs will be higher (> 1000 ) as you describe.
