How to check code for check engine light 94 E320 W124
Hey folks,
New here but figured someone could give me a quick hand.
I've got a 94 E320 w/M104 engine.
152k miles on it. Runs fine but the check engine light just came on. I reset it and it came back on about 150 miles later. Is there a way to put the ECU/car in diagnostic mode to figure out what the code is (error code)? I'd prefer not to have to take it to a dealer and shell out $100 just to have them pull the code.
Did the operation listed to get the check engine light code and it was 5. Which indicates: "5 Exhaust gas recirculation inoperative". To me that sounds like the EGR Valve is not operating, clogged, etc. Anyone have some experience here and want to point me in the right direction to fix/replace?
Could be a bad EGR but could also be a bad vacuum hose under front top engine cover, or, and this is the most likely, a clogged EGR tube. There is a metal tube that runs from the EGR around behind the engine to the intake side. It is known for getting clogged on your car. It can be cleaned out with a speedo cable or the like, or replaced with a new/redesigned one that is less likely to get clogged. But first thing to do is clear the code and see if it comes back. This can be considered relatively unimportant until your car starts running badly.
