I have a 93 400E that is one of the best cars I have ever owned with 170k miles now. Anyway, I turned the car on yesterday and noticed the idle was at 450 - 500 rmp's. Usually after the inital start up it goes up to almost 1k but then after a few sec settles down at 600 rpm's which is normal right? I drove the car two
and from work and it runs fine but the idle is low whether im in Park, N, or reverse.
This morning I go to start it up and nothing. Cranks but will not stay on unless I accelerate and give it gas. In the meantime while I am accelarating to keep the revs up I hear a screaching noise like the belt tensioner is bad. Sorry if I make no sence but I am wondering if anybody has the slight idea of my problem before I take it in.
Oh, I also looked at the engine for vacuum leaks or loose connections but nothing.
I noticed my 400E doing all of that when the weather got warmer. I noticed the A/C was cycling and keeping the rpms down at idle. My problem was the hard start. My ASR light would come on when it would happen. I shifted from park to drive and back as was suggested here (switch on tranny going) and all was well. A new tune up of caps , rotors and spark plug wires are needed but thats some dough so I will put up with the issues if they come back till I get the cash I need. Also have you checked the wiring harness, I had to replace mine when I got the car last year, it totally fell apart in my hands when I moved it (insulation crumbled off)
I believe I know whats wrong with my car and its the TBA. I tried turning the car on and sure enough it cranked, turned on but the idle fluctuated big time and it finally shut off on its own.
Usually a car shuts off and the only thing that might keep running is maybe a fan but this time after the car turned off I herd a loud noise that reminded me of something locking up. I thought it was a belt tensioner going bad.
Long story short the noise is coming from the TBA. Not to mention that another one the symptoms of a TBA going bad is no cruise control. My cruise control happed to stop working the same week.
