Replaced timing chain 6mths ago on 1987 230TE and all timing gear. Everything fine for 3mths, but recently there is a noticeable 'ring' or chatter on start-up which disappers one the engine is running. Have checked and refitted the tensioner, but problem still persists, anyone any ideas? It appears to be coming from the timing chain cover area rather than the tappets/cam followers, they have all been replaced anyway and are quiet.
Isn't there a slack side shoe that is oil pressure feed to take up the chain wear . Perhaps to seal or adjustment wont hold till the oil reaches a higher pressure.
thanks for your reply regarding the timing noise. I had the privilige of a trained MB technician hear the sound and he was adament, absolutely sure, that the ring or chatter was in fact coming off the starter engage mechanism. If so, then I am stunned that I could have thought the noise was from the front end of the block, not near to the bulkhead. Just shows how one can be over sensitive to a perceived problem, having been involved with the timing gear repair a few months earlier-which clearly is now working and running quietly!
