wifes 260e. when starting out on the road shift seems to happen at to high of an rpm. IE, 2-3 shifts at about 2800 rpm. 3-4 about the same only sometimes you have to let off the pedal a little to get it to shift. keep in mind this is with very little throttle. it is not slipping between shifts but it is shifting hard. modulator? how hard to change? changed trans fluid other day. looked good, no change in shift.
If you haven't messed with the throttle cable adjustment behind the air cleaner then a bad modulator is likely.
A bad modulator diaphragm will 1) make the transmission think that you're at WOT all the time and 2) allow transmission fluid to be sucked up the modulator tube into the intake manifold.
Look at the cylinder #6 intake runner for a single nipple and pipe running straight back and down. Disconnect the pipe from the intake and look for signs of transmission fluid. Hook up a MityVac to that pipe and see if vacuum will hold. If not the modulator is disconnected or bad.
Replacing the modulator isn't too bad but access it tight. There's a small allen head screw securing the bracket that holds the modulator to the transmission case.
funny you should say that about the throttle cable. i just bought the car a few weeks ago. i noticed that the pedal had about .750 of free play. IE mash pedal
.750 then engine responds. i adjusted the throttle for better response, but the tranny did it before this and after this adj. i will check all the things you said though. thanks...
